Location: 117 W 3rd St, Pratt, KS 67124
Cycling

The Open Range Gravel Race is an ultra-endurance bicycle race through a remote and rugged area of the state.  Start time for the 200k race is 8am and there will be a 10 MPH pace cutoff.  The distance for the 200k will be between 125 - 132 miles. If you don't think you can maintain a 10 mph average, please feel free to sign up for the 100k+ or the Open Range Tour.  The 100k+ starts at 8:20am.

NEW THIS YEAR:  Pratt Volunteer Fire Department will handle Drop Bag and rider extraction service. If you want a drop bag delivered and returned, sign up for their service.  Proceeds go to support the Pratt Volunteer Fire Department.

Sun City and Medicine Lodge will be the checkpoints for the race.  Sun City is around 35 mile mark and Medicine Lodge will be around mile 80.  Checkpoints will have water and light snacks.  There is a drop bag service available (proceeds support Pratt Volunteer Fire) to riders. Bring your nutrition in a clearly marked bag or soft-sided cooler and we'll move it to the checkpoint(s).  Heavy duty slider zip bags with ducktape and name work great!  If racing in the 200k they will take 2 bags (one for Sun City, one for Medicine Lodge- they will not move the same bag from checkpoint to checkpoint).

While we do allow transfers up to registration close, we do not allow refunds for race fee.  If you think you might need a refund, we suggest the race insurance provided through BikeReg.  Proceeds from Open Range go to local non-profit.

Running

Description

Welcome to the 34th Annual Hesston Recreation and Community Education Emma Creek 5K/1M run/walk.

This is our annual fundraiser to raise funds to serve our youth, who due to budgetary constraints, would not be able to participate. This race is an critical part of our mission which is "to serve our community so that people of all ages and abilities can have fun, grow and feel a sense of belonging."

If you have participated in the past, things will be a little different this year due to the construction around the high school. Please take note.

The first 600 who sign up will receive a swag bag with goodies from our sponsors as well as a 2025 Emma Creek t-shirt. The one mile will start at 9am. It is a fun run/walk, non-competitive for those who want to support us, but do not want to do a 5k. The 5k will start at 9:30am, with awards ceremony at 10:30am.

In previous years, awards plates were created by artist Lynn Lais. Mr. Lais was a Hesston resident, but has moved to Maine. We have greatly appreciated his artistic works and will be truly missed. We have partnered with Galley Mostaza in Harper Kansas to create our plates this year.

Awards will be given to the Top 10 overall and top 3 per age group. Age groups are 8 & younger; 9-11; 12-17; 18-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70-74; 75-79; 80-84; and 85 and older. The awards ceremony will not be more than 30 minutes.

Lake McMurtry Ultra

Date: April 12, 2025
Time: 7:00 am
Location: Lake McMurtry West Recreation Area
Running

Overview

Oklahoma’s Oldest Trail Run!! The race was started in 1999 by Earl Blewett. Earl saw the beauty of Lake McMurtry with its gorgeous scenery, soft, beginner friendly trail system, spectacular lake views, and reputation for having some of the best trails in the state of Oklahoma for running as well as mountain biking. In 2009 Earl turned the race over to the Tatur organization and its race director Ken Childress. Ken did a fantastic job of keeping the quality, history and tradition of the Lake McMurtry Trail Race alive. The Outlaw group began directing the run in 2019 who added their own flair, while keeping the tradition alive with the same great trails and entertaining aid stations.

Day permits (parking pass) for Lake McMurtry can be purchased at https://www.lakemcmurtry.org/day-permit.html
You can either go to their office and show them your comformation and get a hang tag, or just print the reciept and leave it on your dash.

Outlaw Trail Series

Complete all 6 trail runs in the Outlaw Trail Series (Outlaw, Lake McMurtry, Flower Moon, Dark and Dirty, Liberty's Lost Treasure and Thunderbird) in a calendar year and receive a cool plaque to recognize your achievement. Distance is not a factor (in other words, you can run the 5K or the 135mile). An Oklahoma-shaped plaque with hooks looks great as a display for awesome medals.

Course Description

A variety of distances to choose from with offerings of 100K, 50K, 25K, 12K and 5K on single track, winding through the pines and along the shores of Lake McMurtry. This is a moderately difficult course, great for beginners and seasoned trail runners alike. The courses consist of a loop on the west side of the lake with the longer races utilizing an out and back to the east side of the lake as well. The 50K has about 2,600 feet of gain. The 100K comprises the 50K course twice. Please message us for gpx files.

Cutoff

The cutoff for all distances is 18 hours.

Packet Pickup

Packet pick up will start at 6 am the day of the race. It will be set up at the west side pavilion at the Start/Finish.

Volunteer Benefits
Along with a T-shirt and the normal fun of volunteering, we would like to do more. It takes a community to put on quality races, but volunteers also need to be appreciated. The program will be as follows: Shifts are in 8 hour increments and you must sign up. If you volunteer for one shift at any of our races you will get 25% off registration for any of our future races. Distance is not a factor. So 4 shifts will be a free race.

Clean Water 5k

Date: April 5, 2025
Time: 8:30 am
Location: 2101 W Sim Park Dr, Wichita, KS
Running

Description

PACKET PICK-UP: Friday, April 4, noon to 5 p.m. at Wichita First Church of the Nazarene (1400 E. Kellogg Drive).  Packets may also be picked up on race day starting at 7:30 am at the race information table near the starting line.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? For the seventh year in a row your entire registration fee goes toward building borehole wells and providing clean water education to villages in Africa. After 7 years, we now have 31 Wichita borehole wells in Malawi, Zimbabwe, Kenya, DR Congo & Ivory Coast--each one bringing abundant clean water to thousands of people every day.  This water is life. We use this precious resource many times each day without thought or effort. Yet many people around the world don’t enjoy this luxury because they don’t have easy access to water and possibly no access to clean water. Many women and children around the globe spend hours each day in search of water; their lives revolve around this task. Often the water they collect is contaminated and causes diarrhea, which is the leading cause of illness and death around the world. Many organizations are working to eradicate this problem by building safe wells in communities one village at a time. Access to clean water reduces illness and death, increases school attendance, builds gender equality, diminishes scarcity conflicts and improves impoverished communities. Yes, water is life.

Wichita Clean Water 5K partners with Nazarene Compassionate Ministries in Africa to bring life to villages through the construction of safe wells and clean water education. Many villages try to survive by fetching water from irrigation dams. Since these dams are meant for irrigation, the water is contaminated with diesel from pipes and generators. The water in these dams are further contaminated by animals, who also use this water source. Additionally, villagers bathe, do laundry and clean utensils in this dirty water. Community members often suffer from diarrhea and other waterborne diseases. Many women and children walk over 2½ miles to collect this dirty water.

Your race entry will help bring more borehole wells and water education to even more villages. You can make a life-changing difference to a community of people by registering for the Clean Water 5K and inviting your friends to join you. Together, we can install a safe well and be a part of something much bigger than ourselves.

Course Description

The Prairie Spirit Trail is a beautiful "rails-to-trails" course that runs through numerous quaint little towns. Runners will do an out-and-back, beginning in Ottawa, KS, and traveling south to Iola (100 milers), Welda (100Kers), Garnett (50 milers) or Richmond (50K), then, back north to the finish. The course is primarily on a crushed limestone trail, with asphalt paths as you travel through each town. Manned and unmanned aid stations will be located approximately every 5 miles (with no greater distance than approximately 6 miles), and the course will be easily accessible to crew. It's a great event for first-timers, as it's a flat and relatively easy course. It's also the perfect course for experienced runners wanting to set a PR. The atmosphere will be family friendly, with plenty of places for your crew to hang out and relax while cheering you on. Pacers will be allowed for the second half of all events.

Aid Stations: Manned aid stations are fully stocked with water, electrolyte drink & snack-type foods, including soup & sandwiches, and unmanned aid stations with water only. The approximate distance between aid stations is 5 miles, with no distance greater than a little over 9 miles between manned aid stations; all manned aid stations will have drop bag access..

The following link will open up a Google Map, showing the locations of the Start/Finish (Celebration Hall) and all six manned aid stations/crew access & drop bag points located in Princeton, Richmond (50K t/a), Garnett (50 mile t/a), Welda (100K t/a), Colony & Iola (100-mile t/a). Unmanned (water-only) aid stations are also shown on the map.

Go Green Leprechaun Run 10K and 2 Mile

Date: March 15, 2025
Time: 9:30 am
Location: Dyck Arboretum of the Plains 177 W Hickory Hesston, KS US 67062
Running

Description

81K FITNESS CHALLENGE - February 15 to March 15, 2025
2 MILE and 10K LEPRECHAUN RUN - March 15, 2025

Are you ready for a new fitness goal? In the month leading up to our annual Leprechaun Run, we want to offer a fitness challenge to kick-start your 2025 fitness goals and get you in peak shape to Go Green on March 15!

We think 81k is a nice target number. Dyck Arboretum of the Plains was founded in 1981 and Hesston is located on Highway 81. Eighty-one kilometers in 30 days amounts to 2.7 km/day (equal to 1.7 miles/day and 12 miles per week).

Do you want to do more? Set your sights higher and make it 81 miles. Approximately 6,100 walking steps/day would help you meet that challenge. If you can get into 10K running shape by February, running three 10Ks (6.2 miles each) per week would about get you to 81 miles.
Track your progress on our distance leader board to see how others are faring along with you. Plan to READY, SET, GO 81 in the new year - you can do it!

Awards

All who complete at least 4 miles receive a finisher medal. If you sign up for a longer distance, and decide during the event to drop down to a shorter distance, you still receive a finisher medal as long as you completed at least 4 miles. Drop downs do not qualify for Top 3 Podium awards or place rank. As noted on 3/2/2024 results provided by Timer Guys, the "a.k." note in place of a numbered place rank indicates a drop down from a longer distance. This is the equivalent of an Unofficial Finish.

All 100 Miler finishers receive a buckle.

Top 3 humans in each category receive an Overall Top 3 Podium award. We do not award top 3 female and top 3 male, because our results have shown that both genders are equally capable of outstanding mental and physical performance. The 3/2/2024 Top 3 Podiums were taken by 39% female and 61% male.

Early starts are allowed if you do not think you will have time to complete your target distance within the cutoff time. Early starts do not qualify for Top 3 Awards or place rank.

Hilltop Doubler hats are awarded to those who complete both Saturday and Sunday events. This does not include an event that begins Saturday and ends Sunday. This is for two separate event registrations. One event Saturday, and one event Sunday. For instance, a half marathon on Saturday and a 4 miler on Sunday. It is also possible to complete a longer distance event that is expected to start on Saturday and carry over into Sunday AND a Sunday event such as a 100 miler and a Sunday 4 miler. This is 100 + 4 miles. The additional 4 miles are not concurrent, but consecutive, for a total of 104 miles. Both must be completed by the Sunday 2pm cutoff.

Pacers are allowed after 50 miles. You are allowed one pacer on the course with you at a time. You may swap pacers as many times as you like, but only one pacer at a time may remain with you. Pacers are not allowed to “mule” for a participant, meaning they cannot carry the participant’s calories, hydration, or supplies. The loops are so short there isn’t any need for that anyway. Image

Pace/Elevation

Image

Course

Course is a mix of asphalt walking trail and dirt trails. Asphalt is in black, dirt is in brown. Very little of the dirt trail is technical. The direction will be clockwise for the duration of all event distances. Elevation is significantly less than the 2024 course. There is only 75’ of elevation per mile. Twisted Nut trail goes right next to a creek bed that the kids tend to enjoy. Image

Photography

Photography is provided as part of the trail family reunion experience. They're free for download, social media sharing, and personal printing. Mile 90 Photography will be taking pictures at our 2025 event. Check out our previous photo albums by Arnold Begay Photography: 202420232022

Shirt

Registration comes with a shirt. Since we offer men’s/unisex, women’s, and youth sizes it’s tricky getting all the same color. Just know it will probably be along these lines in heather eggplant or purple with gold colored ink. Image

Child Discount

Our children are our future and our present. We're all about providing positive experiences at an early age that lead to lifelong healthy habits. We love seeing families making memories too. Each parent entry comes with one free child (age 15 or under) entry. This applies to live events only, and does not include virtual. Please direct message us if you are interested.

Huge thanks to the Outlaw Trail Series for leading the way on this. When we saw that they do this, we knew it was the right thing to do. Check out their events at https://outlaw100.com for more family experiences.

Deferrals

Registration may be deferred by 2/26/2025, the Wednesday leading up to the event.

Volunteers

Hilltop does not happen without volunteers. Volunteers applied for grant money to build the trails. Volunteers helped with training runs leading up to this event. We need volunteers. We have everything from helping with setup, packet pickup, course marshaling, aid station, and pack out. Join our team of magic makers. Sign up today as a volunteer for Lake Vian Hilltop Run by clicking on the Volunteer tab above.

Various

Animals must remain on a leash at all times during event, event setup, event teardown, and while camping before or after the event.
